Why Vanderbilt Blockchain Runs...
In 2020, our Vice President, Julian Fernandez, lost his Aunt, Cari Dasen, to ALS. Cari was a remarkable woman whose life was cut short after a valiant two-year battle. Cari was the epitome of hard work and dedication; her tireless efforts in everything she pursued were a testament to her strength and intelligence. She caringly and selflessly devoted her time and energy to those around her, touching lives with her compassion and empathy. In honor of her enduring spirit and the indelible impact she left on everyone she met, I am participating in the ALS Golden West's Running Bitcoin Challenge. This endeavor is a tribute to Cari’s memory and John Spiegel, another inspiring individual whose kindness and brilliance have deeply influenced many. Witnessing the challenges posed by ALS has spurred us to contribute to the search for a cure. "As I run in this challenge, every step I take honors the perseverance and selflessness that Cari exemplified, driving the mission to support those affected by ALS and intensifying the call for urgent advancements in treatments and cures." - Julian Fernández
This initiative combines our passion for blockchain technology with our commitment to making a difference in the ALS community. Additionally, this run is a tribute to Hal Finney, a true pioneer and visionary in the Bitcoin space, whose own struggle with ALS inspires us to run.
What is ALS?
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe.
Why We Urgently Need Your Help
ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, age, or socioeconomic boundaries.
- The average life expectancy of an ALS patient is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
- Every 90 minutes someone in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease.
- There are no known cures and only modestly effective treatments.
- Caring for a loved one with ALS costs families an average of $250,000 USD each year.
Every dollar donated moves us closer to effective treatments and cures for ALS.
