It is with great sadness that we share that Dean Rasmussen passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Dean, beloved by his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family, was highly respected as a significant corporate and community leader and philanthropist. He will be deeply missed by many.
Dean was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease more than 20 years ago, a neurodegenerative disease related to ALS, which affected his father nearly three decades ago. After losing his father to ALS in 1998, Dean put his grief into action. Dean’s unparalleled vision, leadership, and commitment to take action, helped to shape the trajectory of progress in ALS care and the search for cures.
Undaunted by the challenges that accompany developing therapies for ALS and neurodegenerative diseases, Dean was often referred to as the “Godfather of ALS Advocacy.” Dean's vision and philanthropic support catalyzed the creation of the nation’s first federal ALS public policy program and the ALS Network’s advocacy and public policy efforts in California. It is estimated that as a result of Dean’s vision, partnership, and tenacity, nationwide advocacy efforts have generated over a billion dollars in support of patient care, families, veterans, and pivotal research advancing the search for effective prevention strategies, treatments, and cures for ALS.
Dean demonstrated the power that each one of us has to transform the world we live in. Among his numerous accomplishments, Dean served as a leadership capacity for many organizations, including as an ALS Network Advisory Trustee. We invite you to honor Dean’s life and legacy by making a commitment to cure ALS in his name.
