Thomas Harold Glasgow, Jr. went to be with the Lord at 5:15 am on Saturday, February 29th, 2020, with his wife, Judy, their two sons, Shawn and Matthew, and his daughters-in-law, Vanessa and Alia at his bedside in Cottage SICU. Born and raised in North Carolina, Tom and Judy made their home in Carpinteria, California for the past 40 years. Tom battled ALS bravely for almost two years and now he is at peace.
Tom (Tommy), as most people knew him, was born on January 10, 1947 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He attended parochial grammar school and Fike High School in Wilson, NC. He studied business at Barton College in Wilson, and classes in mechanics at Wilson Technical. In April of 1968, he met Judy at his dad’s service station in Elm City, North Carolina. After dating for a month, he asked her to marry him. Tom and Judy were married in June of 1969 and they traveled and did lots of fun activities together. They celebrated 50 years together in June of 2019 and renewed their vows before many witnesses of family and friends at Rincon Backside in Carpinteria, CA.
Tom spent many years as an Auto Technician for early Datsun, Nissan, and then some higher model cars like Porsche, Mercedes and even a couple of Ferraris and Lotus. He eventually decided to change careers, and spent 17 years at Astro Aerospace where he worked as a lead tech, assembling parts to go into space. He loved anything to do with flying and space, and this was a perfect job for him.
Tom retired from work in 2012 and spent the rest of his life doing the things he loved: fly-fishing, river rafting (had his own river raft), hiking, skiing, hang-gliding, flying airplanes and gliders, motorcycle riding/racing and of course, auto racing. He loved watching his grandkids in sports, and he always had a camera close by to capture the best moments.
Tom and Judy were blessed with two robust sons, Shawn Paul in 1975 and Matthew Thomas in 1977. After the kids were grown, Tom and Judy decided to spend a month in Europe where they visited many places including London, Paris, Rome, Edinburgh, and Venice.
Tom is survived by his wife, Judy, of 50 ½ years, his two sons, Shawn (Vanessa) and Matthew (Alia), and seven grandchildren, Chase (15), Kainoa (15), Kenyon (13), Payton (13), Kellen (10), Bryce (7) and Kendall (6 ½). He is also survived by his mother, Mary E Ferrell of Wilson, NC, his sisters, Debbie Watson, Cindy Renfrow and Sherry Zucchi, all of North Carolina, and his brother Tommy Glasgow of Florida.
Tom was a wonderful husband, a dedicated friend, a strict but loving father and grandfather, but stubborn and silly to the end! He was bossing us to fix the fence and making us laugh by plotting schemes to break him out of the hospital the night before he passed. He would have gotten a kick out of knowing that he was leaving this earth to meet with Jesus on a leap year! Rest in peace Tom, ALS free!
Tom called Reality Carpinteria his home church where he loved his church family and helped to start a men’s ministry. A memorial service will be held for Tom when possible.
