Gale Nason Lovrich - 1940-2021
On Sunday, February 7, 2021, Gale Nason Lovrich passed away peacefully in her home. She was 80 years old and suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Gale was born on February 20, 1940 in Maplewood, New Jersey and grew up in Short Hills, New Jersey. Even from an early age, Gale loved the water. She had many fond memories of summers spent at Cape May on the Jersey Shore. After her family moved to Palos Verdes Estates, California in 1955, she spent her teenage years going to the beach. Gale graduated from El Segundo High School in 1958. At that time, Palos Verdes did not have its own High School.
While attending Cal State Long Beach, Gale worked in a pharmacy in Palos Verdes Estates. Her vivacious nature and good looks, attracted the attention of young pharmacist, Jack Lovrich. At the time, Gale’s friend had a crush on Jack. Gale’s friend asked her for help in getting a date with Jack. His response was he would only go out with Gale’s friend if Gale went out with him first. Well, her friend never got her date and Gale and Jack enjoyed 59 years of marriage together.
Gale and Jack raised their two girls in Palos Verdes. Together they loved attending USC Football and Basketball games. They also loved to travel, especially on cruises. One of their favorite places to visit was Alaska because of its breathtaking natural beauty. They must have passed on their love for Alaska because their grandson now lives there full-time.
Gale and Jack made sure that they could always see the ocean from their home. When the view of the ocean from their original home in Palos Verdes Estates became obscured, they bought a house in the Portuguese Bend Beach Club. It was there that their family enjoyed summers on the beach and communal barbeques every Friday evening. And it was there that Gale put her organizational and social skills to good use as General Manager for 30 years until her retirement in 2018. She also was an active Real Estate Broker in Palos Verdes, as well.
Gale was a committed, active member of her community, who loved to be involved in organizations that benefited the greater good. She was a dedicated member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Since her husband and daughters all went to USC, she served on the House Corporation Board of the USC Chapter’s Delta Delta Delta Sorority’s house. She was a member of Palos Verdes Junior Women’s Club for many years. She then taught her daughters about philanthropy and service through the National Charity League Peninsula Chapter. She especially enjoyed working in the Chapter’s Thrift Shop and working as a docent at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Her favorite job at the Aquarium was working as a docent on their Whale Watch Boats.
Gale was a great friend and a mom to anyone who needed one. She and her family loved to cook together. After her diagnosis, her family had weekly dinners at her home. Decades of meaningful relationships meant that her friends came to see her regularly and kept calling, even when she could no longer speak because of ALS.
Gale was predeceased in death by her husband, Jack, and is survived by daughter Marjorie (Marni) Lovrich; daughter Diana Behrendsen and her husband, Tim Behrendsen; and grandchildren Will Behrendsen and Emily Behrendsen. A celebration of life will be scheduled later this year.
