It is with much sadness and regret that we announce the passing of Ismail Tsieprati on December 22, 2020.
Ismail’s cause of death was acute cardio-pulmonary arrest and pneumonia, secondary to ALS.
Beloved by many, he lived a long and happy life with ALS. Although the average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the date of diagnosis, Ismail lived with ALS for 33 years after the date of his diagnosis and more than 50 years from the onset of his first symptoms. He was grateful for the outstanding care he received for more than 40 years from Kaiser Permanente, from all of his doctors and medical staff, and from the wonderful team of nurses who cared for him over the years in his home. His family is also grateful for the excellent end-of-life comfort care he received at Adventist Health in Simi Valley, California.
Ismail was active in the ALS Community, raising awareness and funds for The Golden West Chapter of the ALS Association.
“I was happy and in love with my wife and loved our family,” Ismail once said when asked how he wanted to be remembered after he died.
In 1993, Ismail and his wife Cheryl wrote and produced What is ALS?, an informational video for The ALS Association. In 2003, Ismail was presented with the ALS March of Faces Vice President’s ALS Awareness and Advocacy Award for his outstanding achievements in raising public awareness of ALS. Ismail was also a recipient of a 2017 Walk Hero Award at the 14th Annual Ventura/Santa Barbara County Walk to Defeat ALS.
Although he was totally paralyzed and unable to speak or write by hand for many years, Ismail communicated by blinking his eyes to spell out sentences one letter at a time. Using this method, he co-wrote with Cheryl, One Blink at aTime, a book about their journey living with ALS.
Ismail had the following request:
“In lieu of flowers or other gifts, I wish that donations be made to ALS Golden West for ALS Research.”
