Why I Participate...Erin Taylor

Erin is an amazing young woman. She is wicked smart, extremely funny and before this terrible disease, she was very independent. ALS may have taken her independence away, but it hasn’t taken her zest for life. As most of you know Lily, Erin’s mom, and I have been dating for seven years so Erin is as close to a daughter as I can get. With everyone’s help the brilliant scientists and researchers might one day cure her at least stop the progression of this monster. Erin and Lily fight every day so let’s all lend them a Handt anyway we can.

I will be participating in the ALS Network's Walk & Roll to Cure ALS, because I'm committed to supporting those affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to spreading awareness for the urgency to find treatment and cures.

What is ALS?  

Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that slowly robs a person of their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and, eventually, to breathe. 

Why We Urgently Need Your Help

Every 90 minutes, a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes, another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, gender, or socioeconomic boundaries.

1. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
2. ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease. Someone you know or love may be diagnosed in their lifetime.
3. For unknown reasons, military veterans are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than the general public.
4. Caring for a loved one with ALS can cost an average of over $200,000 each year.
