Why I Participate...

A little over three and a half years ago a very dear friend of mine, Keith Verville was diagnosed with ALS. I have known Keith for over 30 years. He’s my brother-in-law and in reality, he is so much more. Keith has been my best friend for the last 34 years and, as Keith and I have always said, we are truly each others “brother from another mother”. We’ve said for many years, “Keith is the best of all of us”. Keith has been married to his high school sweetheart for 34 years and has 2 sons. He has also been like a father to his “niece”, who they have had in their home since a young age. Keith has been a father figure to many young people that he and his wife have opened their home to, who didn’t have a place to stay.

I will be participating in the ALS Network's Walk & Roll to Cure ALS, because I'm committed to supporting those affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to spreading awareness for the urgency to find treatment and cures.

What is ALS?  

Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that slowly robs a person of their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and, eventually, to breathe. 

Why We Urgently Need Your Help

Since his diagnosis Keith’s health has deteriorated significantly as he’s exclusively confined to a wheelchair now. On November 2, 2024, I will be walking with Keith in the Walk & Roll to Cure ALS. Contributions allow the ALS Network to provide programs and services to families affected by ALS and fund global, cutting-edge research. We have personally seen what they can do with the donations as they have helped Keith and his family, including providing him a wheelchair that would have cost thousands of dollars. Several months ago my wife and I had the opportunity to meet some of the people who are working in the labs trying to find a cure or something to slow down ALS. Their passion was visible, and some of their funding comes from ALS Network. We are trying to help Keith and the ALS Network raise funds. Everything the ALS Network does ensures access to essential care services, free of charge, and accelerates the search for effective prevention strategies, treatments, and cures for ALS. Fundraising and awareness are essential to fueling this progress.

Every 90 minutes, a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes, another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, gender, or socioeconomic boundaries.

1. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
2. ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease. Someone you know or love may be diagnosed in their lifetime.
3. For unknown reasons, military veterans are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than the general public.
4. Caring for a loved one with ALS can cost an average of over $200,000 each year.
