Going the Distance!
Update 9/22/2024: We did it!! We passed my fundraising goal of $750, AND I finished the 47 mile ride last weekend! My legs were sore for days afterward, but it was worth it to raise money for ALS research. Thank you to everyone who donated to support my ride. Thanks to you, my team came in 3rd for overall fundraising this year, raising over $46,000! Go team!
Update 9/3/2024: Thank you everyone who has donated to support me this year!! Thanks to your amazing generosity, I am upping my fundraising goal to $750 from $500. Please support ALS research and I will keep riding!
2024 will be my third year riding, and this year I'm trying to increase my distance! Please help support my ride this year to encourage me to make it to 47 miles! Previously my longest distance was 29 miles. Thank you for supporting me whether with your encouraging words or by donating in honor of Marsha Maytum.
Why I Participate...
This year, one of my architecture firm's founding principals, Marsha Maytum, FAIA, lost her battle with ALS, after being diagnosed in 2020. My colleagues and I will be participating in the ALS Network’s Napa Valley Ride, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS, to remember Marsha and to raise funds to fight for a cure. Marsha was only 69 when she passed, and this terrible disease takes our best and brightest of all ages. Marsha was a role model for me and other young women architects, and I hope to follow in her footsteps in my career.
What is ALS?
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that slowly robs a person of their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and, eventually, to breathe.
Why We Urgently Need Your Help
Every 90 minutes, a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes, another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease. Someone you know or love may be diagnosed in their lifetime.
For unknown reasons, military veterans are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than the general public.
Caring for a loved one with ALS costs an average of $200,000 each year.
Your Impact
Everything the ALS Network does ensures access to essential care services, free of charge, and accelerates the search for effective prevention strategies, treatments and cures for ALS. Fundraising and awareness are essential to fueling this progress.
