Why I Ride
A decade ago I only vaguely knew what ALS was. I'd heard of the Ice Bucket Challenge and I knew that it was a bad disease with no cure. It was only when my father started to show signs of muscle loss and ability at the end of 2014 - and finally diagnosed with ALS in 2015 - that I started to grasp the actual impact of this currently incurable disease.
My father Hardy lived his last year of life with ALS with courage, grace, and dignity - and joy. He never lost sight that "today is a great day", even as he lost his ability to walk and breathe.
Just three months after the first Napa Valley Ride to Defeat ALS in which I participated in 2016 (photo here on this page), that my dad passed away, with my mom, brother, me, and a few close friends by his side. Yet the grace, courage, and joy that he demonstrated at the end of his life was just as he had LIVED his life. That is the gift he gave to me and us all.
Riding my bike gives me joy. When I do physical activities such as cycling swimming, skiing, and more, I think my dad. Though he wasn't able to do most of these during my lifetime (except for lots of swimming!) because his injuries from a motorcycle accident at the age of 21, his strength of body, mind, and spirit are with me when I am active. I appreciate the tall, strong body he gifted me through genetics, and what he modeled to me about courage, joy, tenacity, and positivity.
