Why I'm Riding
My big brother, GERRY STOUT! Gerry is the boy turned man I grew up alongside, always wishing to be like him. He watched out for me, even though I was the annoying little sister, tagging along and chasing him around. If you know Gerry, you know how kind he is and how he always says "yes" when you need something. He is the life of every party. Gerry is funny and enthusiastic, always finding ways to bring fun into everyday life.
I am riding for him because, even though he doesn't need to watch over me as much as when we were kids, I still want to grow up to be as brave and strong as he is. I ride to fight alongside him.
I'll be riding with TEAM STOUT STRONG participants in the ALS Network's Napa Valley Ride, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS, because I am committed to supporting those affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to spreading the awareness for the urgency to find treatments and cures. What is ALS?Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that slowly robs a person of their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and, eventually, to breathe. Why We Urgently Need Your HelpEvery 90 minutes, a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes, another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease. Someone you know or love may be diagnosed in their lifetime. For unknown reasons, military veterans are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than the general public.Caring for a loved one with ALS costs an average of $200,000 each year.Your ImpactEverything the ALS Network does ensures access to essential care services, free of charge, and accelerates the search for effective prevention strategies, treatments and cures for ALS. Fundraising and awareness are essential to fueling this progress. Please contribute today by clicking on the 'DONATE' button on the top right side of this page.
