About Jim Tracy

Jim Tracy, the inspirational track coach at San Francisco University High School, lost his courageous battle with ALS in early 2014. Jim touched countless lives during his remarkable coaching career, which spanned two decades and 40 seasons at UHS. His dedication to the students' success helped the UHS team win 13 state cross country titles in 22 seasons and four straight California Division V titles from 2009-2012. These successes led to Jim’s induction into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jim’s leadership, grit, determination and his students' powerful will to “finish”, led to the creation of an award-winning documentary "Running for Jim". The film tells the inspiring story of this record-breaking high school running coach and his battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease, as well as the historical events that brought his 2010 championship team to international attention. The film also serves as a tribute to Jim’s career, as seen through the eyes of colleagues, family, and runners, and provides awareness and insight into the realities Jim faced while living with the disease.
